Older notes:
How
can you participate?
We need people to just come and dance, make the attendees
feel welcome, encourage them to participate and move, etc. I have no idea how many people will decide to
try our class, so I don’t want to overwhelm them with lots of MVFDers, but it would be nice to have a few ringers there
to help everyone out.
We need a few instructors to do quick teach dances. Although we are calling this a class, the
point is to move. Although I’ve said the
class is 1.5 hours, it is possible we may get limited to one hour. And we only have 4 weeks for the first session
to get them hooked. The point is for
everyone to move and keep moving, not to stand around being taught. We do not have time for 20 or 30 minute
teaches. So, at least while we try to
get this class established, we need to keep the dances to those with simple
structures. Dances we can show and do,
no more than 5 minutes of teaching, etc.
We also need to consider the energy level of the dances. Walking dances are great for warm up and cool
down, and maybe a break, but let’s also look for dances that can be done with
more energy. Dances that can be done by
one person very energetically and another person less energetically would be
great for allowing people to exercise at a level at which they are
comfortable. Finally, we should look for
dances from a broad range of countries.
This should not be a Balkan or Israeli dance class. It needs to be an international dance
class. I’m especially interested in any
dances that you may know from Latin America, the Middle East (not Israel),
Africa, and Asia. The club may not know
them, but that’s ok.
What do I
need from you right now? Part 1
I need to know what sessions you are planning to come to, of
both the promotion sessions and the class sessions. Here is a simplified schedule for the
immediate sessions – indicate what sessions you want to attend and send it back to
me.

What do I need from you right
now? Part 2 (for teachers)
Reread my notes under “How can you participate?” and send me a SHORT
list of dances that you would like to teach and lead, following the
guidelines I have set forth. I will then
draft a schedule for teaching through the first 4 weeks of class (which we’ll
probably throw out halfway through the first class, but I gotta
try). If you choose any couple dances,
consider if you can teach them using “gender-free” terms – for example, partner
A and partner B not Man and Woman.
(Using gender-free terms is at the request of the East End person I have
been talking to.) Depending on how
things progress, we’ll consider updating the guidelines for later
sessions.
What do I
need from you? Part 3
Ok, because things are happening so quickly, I have made
some decisions about how we are going to do things. You may disagree with me on my vision or on
some of the details. Believe it or not,
I actually am open to suggestions that may differ from my point of view. If you would like to make suggestions, please
feel free to do so. I may initially
ignore them, because I am focused on getting this program up and running in
short order. Once we’re in place, we can
talk about better or different ways to do things. Thanks for your interest in making this an
excellent experience for everyone involved.
QUESTIONS?
Well, then send me an email, and I’ll do my best to answer
them.
